A hydrocele is, quite simply, a fluid filled sack within the scrotum around the testicle. Hydro means water; cele means sac.
The fluid is not dangerous but can grow to a large size.
Men seek treatment when the hydrocele gets too big and gets in the way of activities or is noticeable by others.
As the fluid grows to a large size men will most often seek surgical correction. The procedure is called a hydrocelectomy. "Ectomy" means to remove.
Surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, with a couple of weeks recovery with a high rate of successful removal of the fluid.
